A PLACE LIKE NO OTHER

INSPIRED BY LAND AND LEGACY

Welcome to The Burren,

A place of breathtaking beauty and extraordinary history.

Here, cool grey rock etched with crevices and cracks tumbles down to the wild blue Atlantic Ocean. The result is one of nature’s most extraordinary phenomena: a huge rocky pavement dotted with rock formations, caves and fossils, as well as an incredible array of flowers, from native species to Arctic, Alpine and Mediterranean plants. From crashing waves and hidden caves to ancient tombs, forts and monasteries, the Burren UNESCO Geopark is a place apart.

Our founder Noel was born in Ballyvaughan, a descendant of The The O'Loughlin (Ó Lochlainn) clan who ruled The Burren down to the mid-17th century from their chief residence at Newtown House. The Chief of the family was known in later times as the 'Prince of Burren' and clan members were interred in the family tomb near the altar of Corcomroe Abbey. One of the clan he knows this land by heart. His ancestral links to this place and its inspirational beauty led him to establish this distillery in 2019. His passion for reviving greater awareness of ancient Gaelic art, underpinned with the principles of basic original Brehon law inspired his vision.

“I envisaged a unique whiskey, made by hand, rooted in history – a whiskey in the truest sense, Sean Gael.”

By Sean Gael we refer to the native, the indigenous. It can be translated to old Irish
It’s no coincidence that the ancient O’Lochlainn family crest includes the family motto “De Petra Melle”. Honey from the rocks. The O’Lochlainn clan have been prospecting in this wild place for centuries and now Noel is dedicated to creating a warming, honeyed whiskey amidst the rocks

De Petra Melle

The Ó Lochlainn clan crest represents the Irish oak growing out of The Burren’s Karst limestone and bears the motto ‘De Petre Melle’, translating as ‘honey from the rock‘. It is the perfect insignia for Burren™ Irish Whiskey Single Malt.
